The Big Summer Reading List

A reading list for ages 3 – 12


Week 1 (24 – 30 Jul)

Start off summer with the classic Julia Donaldson story! Learn how to describe the terrifying Gruffalo in Chinese.

With summer here, and a ltitle bit of rain to keep things alive, there are plenty of wildflowers for children to spot while they’re out.

With full Pinyin, this is an ideal book for a child seeking a challenge or a longer story. Discover the story of one remarkable little tortoise and its owner.


Week 2 (31 Sep – 6 Aug)

The world is a beautiful place. Our talented artist has his brush out, and he’s going to draw up the most wonderful painting!

With beautiful scenery and a sweet little story about a delivery driver, why not read until the end to find out what’s in your surprise package?

Let’s continue our Roald Dahl reading with this much loved story about a truly fantastic fox! With full colour illustrations, too.


Week 3 (7 – 13 Aug)

In this little book, we’re all going on a special trip to a grape farm. This bus is going to take us on a long journey from the city to the country…

Hervé Tullet’s famous interactive book really brings a little book magic to your reading time. Press the coloured dots to see what will happen!

Some of the most beloved Disney and Pixar movies have been adapted into full-Pinyin and full-colour illustred books! Enjoy them over the summer.


Week 4 (14 – 20 Aug)

Children love learning about how the world works. The water cycle is an incredible thing, and basis for a lot of environmental science.

Another book from the On A Trip series, but this time we’re lifting off to space! Take a tour of outer space and discover its mysteries.

Mi Xiao Quan is a lively, funny young boy who loves playing with friends and being with family. This full Pinyin series is a fun read for older children!

Week 5 (21 – 27 Aug)

The Qixi Festival (Chinese Valentine’s) is on the 22 August! Let’s read a book to learn more about the festival and how it is celebrated.

Yoshimi wants to be just like her big brother and paint nature like him. So when she tries it out… she gets some unexpected help!

Mi Xiao Quan is on some more daily adventures — this time with his grandpa. Lighthearted and funny, with full Pinyin, too… This is a great read!


Week 6 (28 Aug – 3 Sep)

Malala is an inspirational woman for young children still going to school. She lives to fight for school to be an essential right for children!

What makes the perfect pet? After considering many, many options, Rory finally settles with… what?

Translated from Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic tale about a garden and a group of friends. This is a full Pinyin novel for older children.
